Roof Lining Repair: Frequently Asked Questions

Here are straight answers to the questions we hear most often. If yours is not here, call us on 0410 104 145.

Why is my car's roof lining sagging?

The fabric on a roof lining (also called a headliner) is bonded to a thin layer of foam, which is attached to a rigid board. Repair guides commonly explain that over time the foam breaks down and the adhesive weakens. Heat and humidity speed this up, and moisture from leaks can soak the foam. When the foam turns crumbly, it can no longer hold the fabric up. Age is the most common reason, and sun-baked Queensland cars are especially prone. Read more in why car roof linings sag.

Can I just glue it back up or use pins?

Sometimes, but only as a short-term fix. Glue needs something solid to hold on to, and if the foam backing has turned to powder there is nothing for the new glue to grip. Pins and twist tacks may hold the fabric for a while but they leave holes and the fabric usually continues to sag. See repair vs replace for how to tell.

How long does a roof lining repair take?

We advertise a roof lining repair in about one hour at your own home or workplace. The time depends on your vehicle and whether it has a sunroof or other fittings, and we will let you know if a job will take longer than usual.

Do you come to me?

Yes. We come to your home or workplace in Brisbane Northside, Brisbane Southside and Ipswich, and we also service the Gold Coast. See our service areas. If you would rather bring the car to us, our upholstery shop is at 59 Lobb Street, Churchill, and roof linings there can be cheaper.

What cars do you work on?

We replace roof linings in cars from your humble Commodore or Falcon right up to the more complex jobs on European cars with a sunroof. When you call, tell us the make, model and year, and whether the car has a sunroof or DVD player.

Can you repair a car with a sunroof?

Yes, but sunroof vehicles take more care because the lining has to be fitted around the sunroof opening and its mechanism. See our page on sunroof roof linings.

How much does it cost?

The price depends on your vehicle, its size, whether there is a sunroof, and the condition of the lining board. We give a free quote, so please call us with your car details.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. A 5 year warranty comes with every job. Our warranty page explains how it works and how it fits with your consumer guarantees.

Will the new lining sag again?

A correctly installed lining should last for years. How long depends on the quality of the work, the heat and moisture it faces, and how the car is looked after. Parking in the shade, using a windscreen shade and fixing leaks quickly all help. If it does sag during the warranty period, contact us.

Does roof lining repair fix a water leak?

No. If the existing lining is stained or damp, a leak from the roof, sunroof drain or window seal may be the cause. It should be repaired as well, otherwise moisture can damage the new lining.

What if my lining is stained or discoloured but not sagging?

Stains can mean a leak, and sometimes the board underneath is damaged too. Call us with a description or send us photos and we can tell you what to expect.
