Roof Lining Repair for Cars With a Sunroof

A sunroof makes a car brighter and more enjoyable to drive, but it makes roof lining work more complex. We replace roof linings in vehicles with sunroofs, from everyday cars right up to the more complex jobs on European cars. This page explains what is different and what to tell us when you call.

Why sunroof cars need extra care

In a car without a sunroof, the lining is one large panel that can usually be lifted out through a door once the trim is removed. A sunroof changes that in several ways:

The lining has an opening and edges to finish. The fabric has to be shaped and trimmed neatly around the sunroof opening, so the edge is clean and does not interfere with the mechanism.
The sunroof assembly can be in the way. Guides for different makes show that, depending on the model, parts such as the sunroof's inner panel or the surrounding rubber edging may need to be released or moved so that the lining can come out.
The lining often must come out in a particular direction. Seats, pillar trim and the sunroof area all affect how the board is removed and refitted, and the exact method varies from vehicle to vehicle.
Leaks are a bigger risk. A blocked or disconnected sunroof drain can let water into the roof cavity, which soaks the lining and its foam.

Sunroof drains and moisture

Sunroofs have small drain tubes designed to carry water away from the opening. If these block or come loose, water can find its way into the lining. A stained lining around the sunroof frame, or a damp smell, can point to a drain problem. We will let you know what we see, but a leak is not fixed by replacing the lining. It is best to have the drains cleared or repaired as well so that the new lining stays dry.

What the job involves

For a typical sunroof vehicle we remove the trim and fittings around the lining, release the lining from around the sunroof frame, take the board out, strip off the old fabric and failed foam, prepare the board, and re-cover or replace it. The lining is then refitted, the sunroof opening is finished cleanly and the fittings are put back. Because a sunroof vehicle takes more care, it may take longer than a standard repair, and we will tell you if so.
